Start a new scheduled task that points to the batch file saved above. Have it run once each day at whatever time is convenient. I check the log files each morning to make sure that things that I worked on the day before were backed up. Where source is the folder that you want to backup and destination is the backup on the network drive. The arguments tell xcopy how to handle certain situations. Once you have made the changes that you nee, save the file as backup.

The Backup script, in particular, includes options to backup a specific Thunderbird profile to an additional spot. If you use Thunderbird for your email, you may consider using that. There is also an option to double backup pictures. Both of these options are disabled by default. I have tried to keep the dependencies of these scripts as minimal as possible.
The options depend in part on how your VPN users connect. If they use a client that they connect after logon, then you'd have to keep using the script. However, if they have either a VPN appliance or a VPN client that connects before logon, then you could use a roaming profile.
The question probably comes down to whether they can give the computer the time required to save the profile at logoff. In my case, the one user works out of a home office, so he can just leave the computer sit and process its logoff for as long as it takes. However, the other is in a partner's office, and in his case, the roaming profile took too long to save. As for Folder Redirection, you are correct on how it works. I am not certain on the details of how Offline Files handles caching the offline copies.
I think that when a file is saved, both the network file and the offline cache copy are updated at the same time. So now I'm back to my earlier post. How do I make robocopy not crap out when trying to read the non-existant My Pictures and what not in the users Documents? I'm trying to look into.
